Bhartu, Westlake show well at World Cup

Ottawa, Ontario | March 21st, 2017


 

Canadian bowlers Hirendra Bhartu, Nanaimo, B.C. and Pricilla Westlake, Delta, B.C. finished just short of the knockout rounds at the 2017 World Cup Indoor Bowls Championsips in Warilla, Australia.


Bhartu and Westlake finished 5th and 7th in their respective groups.


Bhartu started the tournament on a high note, winning four of his first five matches. He finished the event with eight wins, only losing to the four players who finished ahead of him in his section: Scotland, Australia, Malaysia and Jersey.


Westlake struggled in the beginning of the tournament, losing four of her first five matches before finding her way and winning four of her last six matches. Westlake heads to the Gold Coast, Australia where she will compete in the World Youth Championships, March 27th to April 2nd.  


Semi-finalists are set for the World Cup knockout rounds with Scotland’s Ronnie Duncan taking on Australia’s Jeremy Henry, while New Zealand’s Ali Forsyth, a Gold Medalist at the recent World Championships takes on Malaysia’s Mohammed Soufi Rusli.


In the women’s semi-finals, Australia’s Natasha Scott meets Guernsey’s Lucy Beere while New Zealand’s Joe Edwards faces Malaysia’s Nor Hashimah Ismail.
