Bowls Canada Boulingrin is pleased to announce that George Cubiss will be the National Chief Umpire for 2018.
Cubiss, a resident of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has been an official since 2006. “It is an honour to be appointed to the post by the Board of BCB and I know I have some big shoes to fill,” said Cubiss. “Nick Watkins (previous Chief Umpire) has been an excellent mentor for me and still is. I have also been fortunate to be a member of the National Officiating Committee with Nick, Helen Leroux, and Sharyl Ann Milligan. I count myself to be very fortunate to be on the committee of these learned officials.”
As head umpire for the province of BC, Cubiss will have his hands full this year by officiating at eight provincial championships, three national championships, and delivering Level 1 Umpire Courses as well. When asked, Cubiss said “I will still have time to enjoy my bowling in between. I want to keep the same high standard of officiating which the bowlers expect and have had in the past. Hard work, perseverance, and an understanding wife will help to achieve this.”
Cubiss and his wife emigrated to Canada from the UK in 2002, and joined the Maple Ridge LBC a year later. This will be Cubiss’ 51st year as a bowler, having been a Crown Green bowler since his early 20s.
