August 6, 2019 – Ottawa (ON)
The 2019 Canadian Youth Championships are set to begin at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club in Victoria, BC. The competition will take place from August 6-10, 2019 and will feature the top youth bowlers from across the country in men’s and women’s Under 18 and Under 25 divisions. The top four bowlers from each division will be named to Canada’s Youth Development Squad for a one-year term.
The Juan de Fuca bowls club is no stranger to hosting top events. The club hosted the 1994 Commonwealth Games lawn bowling event and more recently hosted the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships in 2017. As one of just three clubs in Canada with four greens, the club is well suited to host this prestigious event.
Both 2018 Under 18 winners, Erik Galipeau (ON) and Emma Boyd (BC), will be moving up to the Under 25 division for the first time this year. Galipeau and Boyd recently played for Team Canada at the 2018 North American Challenge and are strong contenders to medal in this year’s event. Last year’s Under 25 champions Carah Webster (BC) and Owen Kirby (ON) are both returning for 2019. Webster is hoping that playing on home ground will be an advantage as she looks to make 2019 her third championship title in a row. On the line for the winners of the Under 25 events is a trip to the World Youth Championships to be hosted in the UK in December 2019.
Bowls Canada Boulingrin’s Senior National Team Head Coach, Terry Scott, will be attending the event to scout out Canada’s next top talent. With numerous National Team athletes in attendance, including the likes of Jordan Kos (SK), Baylee van Steijn (ON), Brandon Watson (SK), and Carter Watson (SK), Scott will be sure to have his hands full. Play begins at 9am (PDT) on August 7.
The Youth Championships are sponsored by long-term supporter MVP Sports. For over 20 years, MVP Sports has encouraged the growth of the junior program by providing financial assistance to the host club, as well as goody-bags for the participants and prizes for the winners of the event.
