Vancouver, British Columbia | November 8, 2014
It was a week of quality matches and many memorable moments at the Canadian Indoor Singles Championships in Vancouver, BC. Using the home soil to their advantage, the British Columbia bowlers performed very well having representation in both the Gold and Bronze medal matches on both the Men’s and Women’s sides.
In the men’s final, it was Commonwealth Games bowler and British Columbia team member Tim Mason taking on John Bjornson of Manitoba. While Mason finished first in the men’s division with ten wins and one loss in the round robin, that was to Bjornson himself in close 7-5 and 5-5 matches. The final went back and fourth with Bjornson taking first prize. In the bronze medal match, it was another BC native Michael Leong taking on Dave Cox from Alberta. Both bowlers were tied in the standings with a record of 9-2. Leong and Cox both played well but in the end it was Leong who won the bronze.
On the women’s side, it was Josephine Lee of BC taking on defending Indoor Singles Champion Kelly McKerihen from Ontario in the finals. The two women faced each other in the first round of the competition and needed a tie-breaker to determine a winner with Lee coming out on top. Both women battled hard throughout the event as well as the final and it was close right until the end with McKerihen defending her title as champion. In the battle for bronze, it was Dianne Fulton from BC against Claire Day from Alberta. Similar to the gold medal match up, Fulton and Day needed a tie-breaking match in the round robin to determine a winner with Fulton narrowly escaping with the win. Fans were not left disappointed in the medal rounds with Fulton taking Bronze.
Both Bjornson and McKerihen have won the right to represent Canada at the 2015 World Cup in Warilla, Australia in April. Competition was fierce and Canada will be well represented when they take on the world in 2015.
