September 2016 will see a flurry of international activity in Vancouver BC as the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club (PIBC) gets ready to host the 2016 North American Challenge (NAC).
The NAC is a biannual challenge match between the high performance teams of USA Bowls and Bowls Canada. Each nation will field ten men and ten women who will be divided into two five-member squads. The squads are named Folkins and Jarvis in honour of bowling legends Graham Jarvis (Canada) and Dick Folkins (USA).
The event is played over a three day period with two days of pre-event practice. The 2016 competition dates are September 29 to October 1.
PIBC is a world class indoor bowls facility which is home to more than 300 regular members. “We believe practising and playing competitively in great facilities such as PIBC will provide our Canadian athletes with the best possible opportunity of playing well in major international events such as World Bowls. We could not be more thrilled to be hosting the 2016 North American Challenge,” said Alan Webster, Chair of the 2016 NAC Host Organizing Committee.
While it is unusual to host the NAC at an indoor location, both nations are looking forward to the fast indoor pace to help set them up for the 2016 World Bowls Championships which will occur later in the fall in Christchurch, New Zealand. Don Caswell, Chair of the High Performance Committee and Team Manager of the 2015 Asia Pacific Championship team, is looking forward to seeing the Canadians play at the indoor venue for the 2016 NAC. "PIBC was a great venue for our training camp last year. Our athletes learned about playing on a true fast surface. While it can't recreate the winds that we will see in Christchurch, the indoor pace is very close to what we will experience in New Zealand,” said Caswell. “It will also expose more athletes from the US and Canada to a different venue and a different type of NAC. I think that in itself is good for the game."
