Bhartu and Westlake Return to World Cup
Ottawa, Ontario | March 06, 2018
Hirendra Bhartu (Nanaimo, British Columbia) and Pricilla Westlake (Delta, British Columbia) are returning to Warilla, Australia to compete in the 2018 World Cup. This annual singles tournament features competitors from over 20 countries and is played on the indoor greens of the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club. The 2018 event is set to begin on March 6th and runs through until March 14th.
Bhartu and Westlake earned the right to compete in Warilla when they defended their 2017 Canadian Indoor Singles Championship titles last November in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Bhartu will be making his fifth appearance at the World Cup, having represented Canada for three years in a row from 2007-2009, as well as 2017.
This is Westlake’s third appearance at the premiere event. The World Cup is the second of three international competitions Westlake will compete in over the next two months. Westlake, a member of the Canadian Women’s National Squad, will also be representing Canada at the 2018 World Youth Championships in Queensland, Australia from February 24th- March 2nd, as well as the Commonwealth Games from April 4th – 15th. “I think by now I’m used to traveling between competitions with very little downtime between them,” said Westlake. “Last year and the year before I did just that when I competed first at the World Cup and then the World Youth Championships. This year will be reverse with the World Youth Championships first and World Cup second. I’ve seemed to manage just fine with the quick change over between events and I think playing at such high levels only benefits my game.”
Bhartu will be playing in Section 2 of the men’s draw against 11 opponents including New Zealand’s Ali Forsyth and Australia’s David Ferguson. Westlake will also be competing in Section 2 of her draw against 8 opponents, including defending champion Jo Edwards from New Zealand. Round robin play will begin on Tuesday March 6th and will continue until Monday March 12th. Playoffs begin in the afternoon of Monday March 12th, finishing with the finals on Wednesday March 14th.
