Sport plays an important role in the lives of many Canadians. Quality coaching is key to a positive sport experience for participants. Bowls Canada Boulingrin recommends that all coaches become trained and certified in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) as well as the Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders training to ensure that coaches have the tools and knowledge they need to work effectively. Bowls Canada NCCP
The NCCP is a training and certification program for coaches, offered across Canada in more than 65 sports. The program was designed to meet the needs of a wide range of coaches – from those who introduce beginners to sport to those who work with Canada’s high performance athletes. The NCCP, which launched in 1974 and is delivered in partnership with the government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, and national/provincial/territorial sport organizations, endorses national standards in coach education and certification. The NCCP empowers coaches with knowledge and skills, promotes ethics, fosters positive attitudes, builds competence, and increases the credibility and recognition of coaches.
Bowls Canada currently has three coaching programs that meet NCCP national standards: Bowls Club Coach, Bowls Competition Coach and Bowls Performance Coach .
LEVEL 1 and LEVEL 2 is no longer offered by the NCCP partnership or by Bowls Canada. The Bowls Club Coach and Bowls Competition Coach programs replace the old Level 1 and Level 2.

Bowls Club Coach NCCP
Purpose
Bowls Club Coach is designed to train coaches who will be working in a club environment with a wide range of beginner bowlers to introduce the basic skills of lawn bowls.

The highest level of accreditation for Bowls Club Coach is NCCP TRAINED. Coaches can achieve this status by completing the workshop: Bowls Club Coach.
Workshop Outline
The goal of this workshop is to help prepare coaches to do some of the specific tasks required to introduce the sport to beginners within a club setting.
- Participant-centered Coaching (90 minutes)
- Meaningful Competition for a Lifetime (80 minutes)
- Safety (50 minutes)
- Making Ethical Decisions (75 minutes)
- Explaining and Demonstrating Bowls Skills (100 minutes)
- Selecting and Implementing Purposeful Games (90 minutes)
- Putting It All Together (30 minutes)
NOTE: This workshop is NOT intended to be a skills clinic for bowlers looking to upgrade their playing skills and technique

Bowls Competition Coach NCCP
Purpose
This workshop is designed for the coach who will be working with a wide range of bowlers who are competing in club tournaments and possibly playing in provincial play-down events.

Coach Accreditation Available
There are two statuses available for coaches: Trained and Certified. TRAINED status is achieved after successful completion of:
- Bowls Competition Coach Workshop,
- Multi-sport Make Ethical Decisions workshop,
- Multi-sport Basic Mental Skills workshop,
- Multi-sport Emergency Action Plan module,
- Multi-Sport Teaching and Learning Workshop, and
- One of the approved Safe Sport courses:
- Safe Sport from the Coaching Association of Canada, or
- Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders from Respect Group
CERTIFIED status is available after the coach has successfully completed
- Bowls Competition Coach Portfolio,
- Formal evaluation in a bowls coaching environment,
AND CAC’s online evaluation for Make Ethical Decisions.

Coaches interested in accessing the Bowls Competition Coach Workshop need to contact their Bowls provincial coaching coordinators. This two-day workshop covers the following topics as they relate to the competitive club and provincial bowlers:

- Teaching and implementing basic tactics and strategy
Coaches looking to access the multi-sport workshops Make Ethical Decisions, Basic Mental Skills and Teaching and Learning need to contact their Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representative.

Coaches access the online Making Ethical Decisions evaluation by clicking on the “My Locker” tab on www.coach.ca. Coaches need a current email and an NCCP CC# to complete this evaluation.
Bowls Performance Coach NCCP
Purpose
This workshop is designed for the coach of athletes who are of intermediate and advanced skill levels and who want to compete successfully at the national level. The coaches of athletes in Provincial and National tournament competitions and coaches of athletes wishing to compete internationally.

- Multi- sport Managing Conflict,
- Multi- sport Psychology of Performance,
- Multi- sport Leading Drug Free Sport,
- Multi- sport Coaching and Leading Effectivity,
- Multi- sport Performance Planning
- Multi-sport Advanced Practice Planning
- Multi- sport Manage a Program, and
- Multi- sport Design a Sport Program
- Multi-sport Make Ethical Decisions
CERTIFIED status is available after the coach has successfully completed:
□ Submission of an Annual Plan
□ Submission of three practice plans with emergency action plans

- Pre-Competition Phase

□ Observation of implementation of one of the above practice plans
□ Observation of coach working with a team during a Competitive Event
