Sanctioned events at which bowlers with a disability compete must conform to the rules of IBD (International Bowls for the Disabled) who in turn are affiliated to the International Paralympic Committee. The goal of a classification system to create a “level playing field” using the main sensory and physical functions of bowls. Classification determines the types of events offered at a competition.
In para bowls, participants are classified into two sections: bowlers with a visual impairment and bowlers with an ambulatory impairment. Classification involves a variety of medical tests that compare muscle strength, range of motion, co-ordination, amputation and balance against standardized classification descriptions.
All bowlers wishing to participate at the National Championships must be classified. Visit the classification page of the website for more information on the classification process and how to apply.
