Play Concludes at the 2018 Canadian Championships

After three days of play, Canada’s men’s and women’s singles champions have been decided.

To start the day, numerous tie-breaker matches were played at the Regina Lawn Bowling Club. Once players were determined, quarter-finals were hotly contested.

Jim Duholke (BC) would take down Roy Riege (AB) 21-16, while Earl Luk (BC) would take down Bob Van Walleghem (MB) 21-12. Patrick Desranleau (QC) beat Christie Grahame (BC) 21-12, while Everett Zwiers (ON) snuck by Maurice Beauchamp (QC) 21-19.

On the women’s side, Claire Day (AB) took down Cindy Higgins (ON) 21-13 while Cathy Larking (ON) defeated Lisa Cheung (BC) 21-6. Betty Van Walleghem (MB) defeated Helen Snare (ON) 21-14, while Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong (MB) got by Jan Robinson 21-13.

In the semi-finals, Jim Duholke and Everett Zwiers went the distance with Duholke winning on a measure 21-20. Earl Luk handled Patrick Desranleau with a score of 21-6.

For the women, Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong took down Cathy Larking 21-16. In a thriller of a match, Betty Van Walleghem barely escaped Claire Day with a 21-20 final score.

In the medal rounds, it was an all British Columbia men’s final as Luk would defeat Duholke 21-10 to claim the gold medal. In the bronze medal match, Desranleu took down Zwiers 21-16. For the women, it was an all Manitoba final as Fitzpatrick-Wong took down Van Walleghem 21-16. In the bronze medal match, Larking defeated Day 21-17.

Both Fitzpatrick-Wong and Luk will represent Canada at the 2019 Champion of Champions event in Australia.

The 2018 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships are an annual outdoor championship that feature both men and women competing across three disciplines: pairs, fours and singles. They will be held at the Regina Lawn Bowling Club in Regina, Saskatchewan from August 22nd to 29th, 2018.
