2021 Bowls Day Winners Announced
Ottawa (ON)
Lawn bowls clubs across Canada joined in a national celebration of all things lawn bowling on Saturday June 5th. Bowls Canada was thrilled to welcome back MVP Sports as the official Bowls Day 2021 sponsor. Registered clubs were entered into a draw to win one of three fabulous prize packages of two Ubi_Launchers® – MVP Sports’ world-renowned delivery aid. The winning clubs were Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club (ON), Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club (AB), and Wanderers Lawn Bowling Club (NS).
“We love being a part of National Bowls Day and we love that the Ubi_Launcher® prize packages will help clubs offer more inclusive opportunities to participate in this great game,” said Dan Milligan of MVP Sports.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced National Bowls Day to pivot in 2020 to virtual celebrations that allowed the Canadian bowls community to connect despite physical restrictions. These virtual celebrations proved so successful that although this year some clubs had the option to host in-person activities, virtual activities remained at the forefront of the 2021 National Bowls Day to accommodate varying health guidelines and weather conditions.
In the week leading up to National Bowls Day, Bowls Canada had a virtual contest each day allowing individuals to be entered in various draws and win great prizes. These activities included participating in a virtual scavenger hunt, tagging each other in a post, spotting the differences between two photos, and coming up with a caption for a provided photo. The winners were announced on June 5th and included Logan Saunderson (BC), Paul Young (PEI), Rachel Jones (ON), and Sandra Hansen Hackenschmidt (NS).
In the month leading up to Bowls Day 2021, Canadian bowlers had the opportunity to submit a video of their best “Trick Shot”. The submissions were compiled to create a virtual connection from coast to coast and the complete video was released on June 5th.
Clubs across Canada also had the opportunity to win a Bowls Canada Learn to Bowl Kit ($400 value) by sharing a photo on social media of how they were spending National Bowls Day and tagging @BCBBowls. The winning club was Saint-Lambert Lawn Bowling Club who shared a photo of their in-person Covid-19 protocol friendly open house event.
“We were delighted with the online engagement for this year’s celebrations”, said Casey Donnelly, Bowls Canada’s Communications and Safe Sport Coordinator. “Knowing the uncertainty around reopening timelines across the country, it was also wonderful to see so many clubs pulling together an in-person Bowls Day event where restrictions allowed. It was important to us to not only celebrate bowls, but to also spread some much needed positivity after what was a long winter for our community.”
