Bird and Kos Fall in Quarterfinals at Champion of Champions
Canada’s Jordan Kos (Regina, SK) and Pat Bird (Calgary, AB) have both been knocked out in the quarterfinals at the World Bowls Champion of Champions event in Gold Coast, Australia.
In the women’s singles, Jordan Kos went 6-2 in her section, defeating Cyprus, Niue, Scotland, Turkiye, Phillipines, and Namibia while falling to Malaysia and Switzerland. In the quarterfinals, Kos faced Anne Nunes from the United States of America. The first set saw the American jump out of the gate with a 9-0 win, but Kos rebounded in the 2nd set with a 6-1 win to tie the match at one set apiece. The 3rd and final set was hard-fought, with only singles scored each end. Nunes ultimately came out ahead, 4-1, knocking Kos out of the tournament.
On the men’s side, Bird went a perfect 6-0 in his section to finish top of the group. Bird defeated Argentina, Switzerland, Israel, Norfolk Island, Scotland and Spain in his section. In the quarterfinals, Bird faced off against Malaysia’s Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple. The Calgary-native got off to an early lead, winning the first set 6-4. The 2nd set was tied 3-3, meaning Dzulkelpe was forced to win the final set in order to force a tiebreak. He did just that, taking the set 8-1 meaning both players won one set and tied the other. The tie meant one extra end was played to determine who would advance to the semifinals. Despite his best efforts, Bird fell short in this extra end and Malaysia’s Dzulkelpe moved on to the semis.
Despite falling in the quarterfinals, this was an excellent showing for Canada as this was the first year of a new format at the event. The traditional two 7-end set games were changed this year to three 5-end sets. As the first time playing this format, Bird and Kos making it to the quarterfinals was an excellent starting point for this new type of event.
