Bowls Canada Announces Cancellation of 2021 NAC
Ottawa (ON)
In consideration of the impact of the COVID-19 virus, the current status of the Canada US border and in line with advice from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Bowls Canada has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 North American Challenge. This decision aligns with World Bowls’ decision to cancel the 2021 World Championships and Champion of Champions events.
The North American Challenge is traditionally played bi-annually in even years with locations alternating between the USA and Canada. The 2020 event due to be hosted by Canada at the Windsor LBC in Windsor, Ontario was postponed to 2021 in hope that the pandemic concerns would be resolved.
“In light of the current third wave concerns in Canada and recognizing that border opening projections are still far from certain, running the NAC this year was simply not a viable option,” said Bowls Canada’s CEO Anna Mees.
The priority remains the health and safety of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, fans, partners and all associated with the Bowls Canada and Bowls USA families. Both Bowls USA and Bowls Canada will continue to closely monitor the situation as it unfolds, following the advice of both sets of federal authorities, provincial and state authorities and the Canadian Sport Medicine Advisory Council.
