The women’s pairs team consists of Leanne Chinery (Victoria, BC) and Kelly McKerihen (Toronto, ON).
This dynamic duo will be looking to put their training to the test against the likes of New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Tonga, and Fiji. Both McKerihen and Chinery have relocated to Australia to further their bowls careers, and the opportunity to show how far they’ve come is finally here. New Zealand’s Jo Edwards and Val Smith will be the favourites to win the pool, but Canada is more than capable of coming out on top. Fiji and Tonga will look to play spoilers, though the game to watch will be against Norfolk Island. Starting with a bye, the Canadian pair will start round two against Norfolk Island and will need to find a way to come out strong. A win against Norfolk Island would boost their confidence and should help lead the way through to the quarter-finals. A challenge for Canada will be for Chinery to switch from skipping the fours team to playing lead in the pairs. If she can find her draw shot early, this team will be tough to beat.

The men’s pairs team consists of Ryan Bester (Hanover, ON) and Ryan Stadnyk (Niagara Falls, ON).
This duo will look to overcome Australia, Guernsey, Brunei Darussalam, and Malta in the round robin. Australia will clearly be the favourites, having won gold at the 2016 World Championships, and boasting a record of 4-0 at the 2014 Commonwealth Games before that. Malta will be a tough second as many Maltese players currently reside in Australia and are used to the fast surfaces. Canada starts the event with games against Guernsey and Brunei. Picking up wins against those two countries should prove as confidence builders for Ryan2 and may be the keys to advancing to the playoffs. One thing to note: three of Canada’s four round robin games take place at night when the greens will be slower. The one that doesn’t is against Australia, which will make it that much more difficult to defeat them when the greens are running quicker.
