McNorton and Ng Claim Gold at Indoor Singles Championships

Mike McNorton and Linda Ng have claimed gold at the 2023 Canadian Indoor Singles Championships and will represent Canada at the World Indoor Championships April 21-27, 2024.

Linda Ng (British Columbia) was keen to defend her title after winning the event in 2022. With a 4-1 record after the sectional round robin, Ng earned a bye to the semifinals by finishing first in her pool. She faced fellow B.C.-native, Vivian Chan, who she defeated earlier in the sectional play in straight sets. In the semifinals, Ng defeated Chan in straight sets again, by scores of 4-3, 7-3. In the gold medal match, Ng won the first set decisively 8-1, before opponent Lorrain Choi found her stride. Choi took the second set 6-2, forcing a one-end tiebreaker. In a nail-biting finish, Ng claimed the gold to earn her way to the World Indoor Championships for the second consecutive year.

On the men’s side, Ontario’s Mike McNorton went 4-1 in his section to finish first in his pool and earn a bye to the semifinals. In the semis, McNorton faced defending champion Jerome Kirby. McNorton won the first set 6-5 before Kirby dominated the second set 6-1 to force the tiebreak. McNorton narrowly snuck out the win in the extra end, sending him to the gold medal final.

In the finals, McNorton faced B.C.-native David Lewis. Similar to the semifinals, McNorton won the first set (8-5) before losing the second set handily (1-8). Once again though, the Ontarian came through in the tiebreaker and earned his way to the World Indoor Championships for the first time.

In the bronze medal games, Jordan Kos (SK) defeated Vivian Chan (BC) to claim the women’s bronze medal (12-1, 5-5), while Jerome Kirby (MB) defeated Heng Lee (BC) to claim the men’s bronze medal (3-5, 9-4, 1-0).

Both McNorton and Ng will represent Canada at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Guernsey, UK from April 21-27, 2024.
