Women’s winners crowned at 2016 Canadian Championship

It was an exciting final day at the 2016 Canadian Lawn Bowls Championships hosted at the beautiful Commonwealth Lawn Bowling Club in Edmonton, Ontario. While both Ontario-East and British Columbia-A made it to the medal rounds in all three disciplines, it was Ontario–East who were the winners of the coveted Lady Alexander Trophy, which is awarded to the team with the most number of points collected over round robin play.
In the Women’s Pairs, BC-A’s Vivien Chan and Gigi Chan won the gold over Ontario-West sister-in-laws Sue and Laurie Roth with a final score of 19-17. Ontario-East’s Helen Wright and Joyce Kruss won the bronze medal over Alberta-A’s Margaret Bruce and Patricia Walker for a final result of 25-8.
The Women’s Triples gold medal final was the featured live-streamed game on the Saturday afternoon with Manitoba-A’s team of Elaine Jones, Betty Van Walleghem and Sandra Mulholland facing British Columbia B’s Josephine Lee, Wendy Hui and Sarina Mak. In the end, Manitoba-A claimed the gold medal with a final score of 19-7. In bronze medal action, the British Columbia-A team of Jenny Sui, Shirley Choi and Rainbow Lung emerged victorious over Ontario-East’s Mary Meldrum, Dona McCallum and Sheila Lumley in a final score of 17-11.
In Women’s Fours action, it came down to the last bowl of an extra end to determine the gold medal winners. Ontario-East’s Elizabeth Cormack, Laila Hassan, Gloria Cheung and Helena Ho emerged victorious after a hard fought game against Saskatchewan A’s Jean Roney, Fran Scott, Anita Nivala and Jordan Kos with a final score of 14-13. In the bronze medal game, home province Alberta-B’s Claire Day, Amanda Berg, Chris Adams and Val Wilson won the bronze medal over British Columbia-A’s Sharon Baldwin, Lisa Cheung, Stephanie Vezina and Zoe Chan in a decisive 20-12 victory.
