Play Kicks Off At The North American Challenge

Laguna Woods, California | October 11th, 2018

Canadian bowlers are ready to face off against Team USA in the biennial North American Challenge. Taking place from October 11-13 at the Laguna Hills Lawn Bowling Club, 20 athletes from each country will compete in singles, pairs, triples, and fours.

Athletes are split into two teams of 10 (five men and five women per team), named after legendary Canadian bowler, Graham Jarvis, and American international Dick Folkins. Each team then competes in gender-specific events against the opposing country. Over the course of three days, 48 games will be played with seven trophies up for grabs:

  • Top Men’s Folkins Team
  • Top Women’s Folkins Team
  • Top Men’s Jarvis Team
  • Top Women’s Jarvis Team
  • Top Combined (men & women) Folkins Team
  • Top Combined (men & women) Jarvis Team
  • Top Overall Team

This year’s event will showcase a variety of Canadian experience, from youth bowlers right up to international medalists. With senior squad members Joanna Cooper (AB), Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong (MB), Jordan Kos (SK), Cameron LeFresne (NS), Pricilla Westlake (BC), and Greg Wilson (AB) leading the charge, the Canadian team will be eager to put their best bowls forward on the artificial carpet of Laguna Hills LBC.

Of the 20 Canadian athletes competing, half of them competed at the 2018 Canadian Youth Championships. Despite such a youthful team, the Canadians are no strangers to international play. 13 out of 20 have represented Canada at World Bowls sanctioned events in the past five years, with seven of them looking to improve upon their 2016 North American Challenge results.
