Team Canada Athlete Announces Retirement from International Competition

19-year Team Canada veteran, Leanne Chinery, has announced her retirement from Team Canada. Hailing from Victoria BC, Chinery, who now makes her home in Waterfall, NSW, Australia Leanne made her debut for Canada in 2005 at the Asia Pacific Championships in Melbourne Australia. When she’s not on the greens, Leanne works tirelessly as a Registered nurse (RN) working the field of health and safety for a large steel company.

During her incredible career, Chinery represented Canada at 4 Commonwealth Games (2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022), 2 World Bowls Championships (2008 & 2016) and 5 Asia Pacific Championships. She was the 52nd capped female in Canadian lawn bowls history and has played in 144 tests for Canada — the 5th most all time.

On announcing her retirement, Leanne reflected back on her incredible international career “I want to thank BCB and the High-Performance Program for allowing me the privilege of representing Canada. There is no greater honour than being chosen to wear the Maple Leaf.  I have always strived to work hard and compete the very best of my ability. I have made so many memories and cherished friendships and I can only hope to one day give back to the game that has given me so much.”

Don Caswell, BCB’s High Performance Manager “When the national team moved to a High-Performance model Leanne was an early adopter embracing the use of mental performance training, sport nutrition along with strength and conditioning as she prepared for events. She led by example — training hard and playing hard! Her commitment and talent will be missed. “

On behalf of the Canadian lawn bowls community we say…..Thank you, Leanne!
