2024 Canadian Championships Ready to Roll
The 2024 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships are set to begin across multiple clubs in Ontario: Lawn Bowls Milton (Milton, ON) and Heritage Greens Lawn Bowling Club (Kitchener, ON) will co-host the Majors which will feature 80 athletes competing in men’s and women’s singles, pairs, triples, and fours; James Gardens Lawn Bowling Club (Etobicoke, ON) will host the Under-21 Youth Championships; and Brampton Lawn Bowling Club (Brampton, ON) will host the Para Championships for bowlers with various impairments.
Majors
Unveiling a new format for the 2024 season, the Majors will feature 8 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams competing across the four disciplines. With squads of 5, teams will compete in singles & fours concurrently for half of the event, and pairs & triples concurrently for the other half. With shorter games and a change to sets play, a full round robin for each discipline is still maintained and players can enjoy a lot of bowling from August 17th to 24th across the two host clubs. The change in format also included a team from the Maritimes where New Brunswick and PEI joined forces to create a Team Maritimes. This change has resulted in PEI and New Brunswick fielding a full roster at the Majors for the first time in many years. With a full field, competition begins at 9am on August 18th at Lawn Bowls Milton.
Youth
The Under-21 Youth Championships will showcase 6 men and 5 women competing in both singles and mixed pairs. Bowls Canada’s National Team Head Coach, Derek Dillon, will be working with all athletes on Monday, August 19th to introduce them to the high-performance program and see first-hand what Canada’s up-and-coming talent has to offer. Nestled between Pearson International Airport and downtown Toronto, James Gardens Lawn Bowling Club is in a prime location for all athletes to enjoy Canada’s largest city while competing on the national stage.
Para
The Para portion of the championships will feature competition for bowlers with visual impairments, physical impairments, and new for 2024: any other kind of impairment. While the visual and physical impairments align with International Bowls for the Disabled’s 8 classification levels, the “open” division is for any bowler with an impairment who falls outside of the 8 recognized classifications.
This is the 3rd year Bowls Canada has run a Para Championship, and the competition will be fierce with all 3 of BCB’s high performance para squad athletes attending. Fresh off of their first international debut at International Bowls for the Disabled’s World Championships in May, Andy Caldwell (ON), Jack Smart (AB), and Louise McLean (ON) will be returning to the national championships to compete against Canada’s top Para athletes and share their learnings from the World Championships. Play begins on August 19th at 9am at Brampton Lawn Bowling Club.
