2022 Championship Season Comes to a Close at PIBC

The last championship for 2022 has come to a close at the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club in Vancouver, British Columbia. After a week of play between 10 women and 12 men, Linda Ng (BC) and Jerome Kirby (MB) have claimed gold to wrap up the championship season.

Women’s Singles

2022 Indoor Singles Women's Medalists Group ShotOn the women’s side, defending champion Bobbi-Jean Charlton (BC) finished the round robin on top with a record of 8-1. Linda Ng (BC) finished tied for 2nd with Jan Robinson (AB) with a record of 7-2 (Ng had more set wins to earn her place in the gold medal match). Joanna Cooper (AB) finished 4th in the round robin with a record of 6-3 to round out the top four.

In the gold medal match, it was a back-and-forth battle between Charlton and Ng. With Ng claiming the first set 10-7, Charlton played fiercely to try and force a tie-break. Despite being up two shots going into the final end of the second set, Charlton wouldn’t be able to defend her title as Ng drew a second shot on her last bowl to tie the set 8-8 and claim gold.

In the bronze medal match, Joanna Cooper stormed out to an early lead and claimed the first set 9-4. Fellow Albertan Jan Robinson wasn’t going to yield easily though, as Robinson took the second set 8-6. In the tie-breaker, Cooper rallied to win 5-0 and claim the bronze medal.

Men’s Singles

Tim Mason (BC) and Cary Lucier (ON) finished with records of 8-3 (Mason had more set wins to earn his place in the gold medal match). Jim Duholke (BC) finished with a record of 7-4.

In the gold medal match, Kirby rebounded from his round robin loss to continue his consistent style of play. With great draw bowling, Kirby wound up winning in straight sets 12-5 and 9-5 over Mason to claim the gold medal.

In the bronze medal match, Cary Lucier got off to an early lead by taking the first set 7-5 over Jim Duholke. The BC native responded by dominating the second set 14-6 to force a tiebreaker. In the tie-break, it was back and forth with clutch shots made by both players. Lucier narrowly edged out Duholke 3-2 to claim the bronze.

As winners of this event, Ng and Kirby will represent Canada at the 2023 World Bowls Indoor Championships at the Warilla Bowls Club in Australia from May 7 – 13, 2023. The international event features men’s and women’s singles as well as mixed pairs.
