Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club Welcomes 2017 Canadian Senior Triples Bowls Championships

Competition begins today for the 2017 Canadian Senior Triples Bowls Championships at the Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club in Peterborough, Ontario.
The Canadian Senior Triples Championships will feature 60 of the best Canadian lawn bowlers over the age of 60. Ten teams of three men and three women will compete over six days for the national men’s and women’s titles. Competitors have won the right to represent their respective provinces having qualified through a provincial play-down process.
Fresh from his gold medal victory at the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships in Victoria, British Columbia last week, Saskatchewan’s Murray Pituley will now join teammates Garth Zummack and Gary Laurence to take on Canada’s best Senior Triples teams in Peterborough.
Clarice Fitzpatrick of Manitoba is another recently crowned Canadian champion having just won the Women’s Pairs gold medal with her daughter Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong. This week, Clarice Fitzpatrick will join Marilyn Baron and Sharon Lozinski in Peterborough to see if she and her teammates can provide Manitoba with a Senior Triples national title.
The two daily draws of round robin play will start on Friday August 25th at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm local time. Play will continue on Saturday August 26th through to Tuesday August 29th with daily draws at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Tiebreakers (if necessary) will be played at 1:00 pm on August 29th and the medal rounds will take place on Wednesday August 30th at 9:00 am.
Triples is a format where teams of three play against each other with each player using three bowls delivered alternately with the opposing team. The winner is the team with the highest score after 14 ends of play. Often referred to as “curling on grass”, the object of the game is to roll your bowls closer to the target than your opponents. The target is a small white ball called a “jack”. Taking into account that the jack is moveable, the bowls are biased, and no two greens are the same, lawn bowling is a complex sport involving multiple offensive and defensive strategies.
