St. James Lawn Bowls Club Hosting the 2018 Canadian Youth Championships

Winnipeg, MB | August 13 2018

The top youth lawn bowlers in the country will be showcasing their skills and vying for the titles of Canada’s top youth champions at the St James Lawn Bowls Club in Winnipeg beginning August 14th.  With athletes ranging in age from 12 to 23 years, this tournament is a fantastic learning experience for all involved and an even better young bowler showcase. The winners of the Under 25 division will be recognized as the top bowlers in Canada for their age group, they will also have the opportunity to play for Canada at the International Indoor Bowls Council’s World Junior Championship in Glasgow, Scotland in December.

Bowls Canada Boulingrin is pleased to welcome back long-time supporter MVP Sports to this event.  One of Canada’s top bowls suppliers, MVP Sports has been championing the development of Canadian youth bowlers for many years.

2017 U25 Champion Carah Webster (BC) will be back in action to defend her title while runner up Lucas Caldwell (ON) is gunning for another shot to take the U25 title.  The U18 titles are up for grabs this year with both defending champions, Jordan Kos (SK) and Owen Kirby (ON) moving up to the U25 division. The top four finalists of the U25 and U18 singles events will be named to the Canadian Youth Squad.

This year represents a new format as the U18 and U25 singles play will run currently in the mornings with the Forster Lang pairs event running in the afternoons over the four days of competition. The Forster Lang pairs open event is a favourite of all the competitors as the athlete are randomly paired to compete for the coveted Forster-Lang trophy.

All athletes will also benefit from a mini-training camp run by National Coach Terry Scott. Coach Scott has previously worked with the world renowned New Zealand Blackjacks High Performance Squad and most recently lead Team Canada to best-ever results at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
